Marketing Your Small Business: Tools For Success

March 30th, 2010

It’s a busy lunch hour in the downtown deli and a local business owner waiting in line starts a friendly conversation with a stranger. Intrigued by the conversation, the stranger asks for a business card; the business owner shudders. He’s unequipped since he hasn’t invested in the necessary marketing materials. He laughs awkwardly, explains that it’s a start up company, and offers his name, number, and web site on a napkin. The stranger politely takes it, but now has the impression that the owner is unprepared, not business savvy, and lacks credibility. The small business owner has lost a potential connection that could have been made with the right tools on hand.

Investing in printed marketing materials is essential to promoting and owning a successful business. Items such as business cards, flyers, and brochures don’t just deliver information about your business; they represent a tangible piece of future growth and potential sales that you can provide to prospective customers to generate leads. Deciding on an effective and attractive design templates is important as well. Your materials should also reflect the image you want to present to your target audience. This means carefully choosing the graphics, color scheme, and layout of your materials in addition to the style and format of the content itself. Printed materials are important to keep on hand, but other marketing tools can be helpful to promoting your business as well.

Do you sell products that can improve or simplify the lives of your customers? Product samples are a great way to show the proof is in the pudding when it comes to your product. In this same respect, testimonials and success stories from satisfied customers are a solid marketing technique for small business owners as well. Want to improve your returning customer rate? Try an email blast campaign or bi-weekly electronic newsletter to keep your customers informed about special offers, discounts, and new developments for your small business.

Being prepared with the right marketing tools is a process that requires cost-efficiency, research, and some careful thought. Any small business owner knows that having the right marketing materials in your toolbox can make all the difference and investing in the proper tools is an investment in your success.

Building Your Own Website

March 29th, 2010

Many people have thought at some time that they would like to create their own website. Some would do it for pleasure (e.g. a family website), others for business purposes. Unfortunately after a brief look at what is involved in building a website this is about as far they get. They have hit that barrier! The dreaded four letters HTML has put them off and this is where everything fizzles out because it looks so complicated. I had better leave this to the experts or the technical guys is the thought that crosses their mind. (Yes. I used to be one of them!) But thankfully things have changed. Now you can easily get round the technical problems because there are a number of programs (some of them free) which enable you to build your website without needing any knowledge of HTML (HyperText Markup Language). Having said that it is always a good idea to know a little bit of the technical stuff to be able to find your way around it if necessary. And it doesn’t take that long to understand the basics. Now the first thing you need to do is to get some information on how to set about building your website. Just like you once needed to learn word processing or even opening and sending emails.

This information can be obtained on-line through videos or e-books some of which are free or cost very little. The important thing is to find something which is written in layman’s language and takes you through the process step by step. Once you find the course of instruction that is suitable for you you will find that it is not really that difficult to get a website up and running. You just need to take things step by step and follow some straightforward instructions. You now have the opportunity to get the information and guidance that is necessary to build your own website in a course written with the beginner in mind. And it’s free!

You do not need to worry about terms such as Domain Name and Web Hosting Company as these will be explained in detail as you go along. Having said that it is a good idea to think of an appropriate name for your Domain well in advance as it should be descriptive of the content of your website if at all possible. This is particularly important if the website is intended for business use. In fact it would be preferable to think of more than one domain name as very often when you come to register it you might find that someone has already got the name that you have selected. Let me stress that you do not need to know anything at all to begin with as everything is explained in detail in plain simple English, not in technical jargon. Details are given on: How to create a website How web pages work How to upload to the internet Auto responders – and many other topics Perhaps the most difficult thing to do is to actually get started. Remember take just one step at a time and things will eventually fall into place far sooner than you think.
